The cat's grace and beauty have inspired artists since ancient times.
4,000 years ago, ancient Egyptians were probably responsible for taming the first cats that lived with man. The cats controlled the rat population that was attracted to the Egyptian’s vast grain stores.
They called their cats "miaw" and adorned them with jewels and gold earrings. They worshipped cats as Gods and believed that the Goddess Bast represented the life-giving heat of the sun.
Although it was strictly forbidden to export cats from Egypt, some Phoenician traders took them to Rome and from there they were distributed to the rest of Europe by the Romans. Cats were eventually taken to all parts of the World by traders as ‘ship cats’ thanks to their skills at killing rodents to preserve the food stores on long journeys.
In the 13th century, the first witchcraft trials were held, and Egypt's beloved cat suffered greatly. They were blamed for everything and it was only by the 17 century they finally began to gain acceptance.
By Victorian times they became pampered pets. Recognized not just as rat catchers, but faithful loving companions.
Cats come in a whole variety of sizes, coat lengths and temperaments; and there’s bound to be one out there to match your lifestyle.
It’s important to appreciate differences in gender. Males will mark their territory by spraying, have a tendency to be involved in territorial fighting and are prone to roam. All this can be stopped by neutering before the male reaches puberty.
Females which are left intact can be over affectionate when in heat and will make a yowling noise to attract a mate. On the whole, males do appear to be more affectionate, while females tend to be more aloof. It all comes down to your personal preference.
There are three main body types. The Cobby, the Foreign and the Muscular.
